CHAPTER 7

ADVENTURES IN LIBYA

As the Jasmine approached the Libyan coast, Valentin left Zaren in command of the wheelhouse and came down to the cabin, where Elaine and Palmer were enjoying a cool beer in the stifling, mid-morning heat.

‘I’ve been thinking and talking with Zaren about your search for your brother.’

‘Oh yeah… so, tell us what you’ve come up with,’ said Elaine.

‘Before I do, have you any idea where your brother might be in Libya?’

‘Well, Dexter is on a university course studying Roman and Greek architecture, and when he last called me, he said he was looking at the ruins at Leptis Magna and Sabratha,’ she replied.

‘Okay…that’s good, because I know where they are on the coast, and it would be much safer for me to drop you at either of those places, rather than Tripoli.’

‘Well, we thought we would start at Sabratha,’ said Palmer.

‘That’s best… so, I’ll take you there and will return to collect you a week later,’ said Valentin, with a smile.

‘You’d better!’ exclaimed Elaine.

‘Oh, I’ll be there alright… because then you’ll owe me another thousand Dollars!’

Elaine smiled and asked, ‘so did you and Zaren come up with anything else?’

‘Yeah… if you can’t find your brother in Sabratha or Leptis Magna, then go south into the desert, find the tribes and talk to them, because they know everything,’ replied Valentin.

‘Isn’t that too dangerous?’ asked Palmer.

‘Not really… the desert Arabs are always hospitable, and will respect strangers.’

‘Hmm… I’m not so sure,’ said Palmer.

Valentin smiled and replied, ‘listen… I wouldn’t put you in any danger… because if you come back safely with your brother… I’ll have another thousand Dollars!’

‘That’s for sure,’ said Elaine, with a smile.

‘Okay… now, just in case you don’t make it in a week, I’ll come back one week later and if you’re still not at Sabratha… who d’you want me to tell that you’re missing?’

‘Oh my God… I just can’t even think about that,’ replied Elaine.

‘Tell the Corinthia Hotel at St. George’s Bay… they’ve got all our details,’ said Palmer.

‘Okay… now, we’ll be at Sabratha by sometime this afternoon, so be ready,’ said Valentin, as he stood up, left the cabin and returned to the wheelhouse.

An hour later, Zaren came down to the cabin and started preparing a light lunch for them.

‘I’m not that hungry,’ said Elaine.

‘Then, I’ll make up something for you to take with you,’ said Zaren.

‘Thanks,’ said Palmer.

‘We’ll be there soon.’

‘Any idea how long?’ asked Elaine.

‘Perhaps an hour or so,’ replied Zaren.

‘Then, I’d better get changed into my blouse and old jeans… don’t want to look too conspicuous,’ said Elaine.

Zaren smiled and said, ‘lady… you’ll both stick out like sore thumbs, but don’t worry… you look like tourists.’

‘Well, that’s a relief,’ said Palmer.

While Elaine changed her clothes, Palmer went up on deck for some fresh air, and then to the wheelhouse, to talk to Valentin.

‘I’m a bit worried about this adventure, Valentin…’

‘So am I… Libya is a dangerous place and I think your best bet is to join a tourist group, looking at the ruins, while you’re in Sabratha.
